In Toronto this weekend the fourth annual Nuit Blanche takes off Saturday night. An all night festival of art in its many forms. The highlight for many is the demonstration art. I recall the first year seeing projected images of the Three Stooges being shot up on a building at Queen and Dufferin with Curly slapping Moe repeatedly over and over. Is it art? For some yes, and that's the beauty of the process. Colouring outside the lines, and whether you agree or not, it is universally understood it's subjective.
Sony recently unveiled something very "Nuitblanch-esque". They placed loud speakers at various positions throughout an entire village in Iceland to develop awareness of the Sony brand.
The agency behind it, Fallon of London, filled the village of Seydisfjordur, Iceland with speakers and sounds by Richard Fearless ( Death in Vegas ), Mum, Bob Dylan, Toumani Diabate, Roberto Goyeneche, Murcof, Federico Cabral, Guillemots, and others.
It proved to be the talk of the town.
And finally.. few define commercial.. into art better than Nike. Music, visuals and special effects all beautifully combined.
Have a great weekend.
